Customer Reviews: THE LATE '60'S COWBOYS September 26, 2007 Miles Daly (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Reportedly some of the players, and Tom Landry himself, were not happy when this book came out. As a Dallas beatwriter, Perkins was with the team daily, but I don't think anybody knew he was writing this book. There is nothing really controversial, but he got a little close to some of the players and some of their feelings about salaries, racism, and attitudes toward the front office and coaches made their way into the book. And vice versa.
Written in diary form, it follows the team starting with the Ice Bowl, then training camp, the preseason, and through the '68 season. It's a great look inside a team that was trying to shed it's image as chokers. Up until then, there had been no team quite like the Cowboys. Americas Team on the launching pad. Meredith, Lilly, Perkins, Renfro, Garrison, Rentzel, Hayes, Reeves, Jordan, Neely, Morton....
The Pokes rolled through the season at 12-2, winning the division easily, but again stumbled in the playoffs for the third straight year. Hence the title. Don Meredith never played another down.
This is a great book for anyone interested in the history of the Cowboys, or any 60's NFL fan in general. There is a great photo section also.
